Dr. Leo S. Butler
Mission Statement
The Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center,
which is centrally located for the persons of this community, serves
the residents of South Baton Rouge in their social, civic, medical,
cultural, recreational and spiritual pursuits. The center offers
many workshops to adults, senior citizens and children in an effort to
uplift and inform them of services that can enhance their lives in a
positive way. The center serves as a utility payment site for
Entergy, Baton Rouge Water Company and the service fee business
department. Blood pressure screenings, computer literacy
classes, commodity distribution, dance classes, energy assistance and
after school tutoring are other free services available. The
center also serves as a host for the Senior Employment Program, City
of Baton Rouge Court Services Program and the Louisiana State
University and Southern University community services program.

What types of services do you have to offer at the Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center?
The Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center provides
a variety of services to the community such as rent, mortgage and
utility assistance such as Project Care for senior
citizens. We also provide a monthly food distribution for senior
citizens who meet the income guidelines and quarterly commodities
distribution every 3 months to eligible households.
Do I need to live in a certain area to receive service from the
Community Center? Yes, the Dr. Leo
S. Butler Community Center mainly serves the residents of South Baton
Rouge. What days and times do you accept assistance applications?
Applications are accepted Monday
through Thursday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Applications are taken on a "first come, first served" basis until the
quota of 30 per day has been met. Applications are taken until
funds will be depleted. What funds are available now?
At this time, funds are available for energy assistance. Please
call 389-4814 or 389-4896 for further details and qualification
requirements. What days and times are the monthly commodities
given? The Food for Families or
commodities distribution dates for the Community Center are on the
every
first, and third Thursday of each month from 8:00am-11:00am. For a list of the necessary requirements
call 1-800-522-3333. For the quarterly commodities program
through the Social Services department call 389-4896; 389-4814 or the
main office at 358-4561 (BRACA office). What about food for
infants? The East Baton Rouge
Parish WIC office number is 342-1711. They assist with formula
for infants and food for expecting mothers. What additional
programs do you provide for senior citizens?
The Community Center also offers fitness classes
to senior citizens to help them prolong their health and longevity.
Call Mrs. Theresa Townsend, the personal trainer at 389-4860 for
further details concerning the Sensational Seniors
Fitness Program. The Community Center also offers computer classes
for the senior citizens to help them keep abreast of changing
technology and to assist them to become more computer literate. Call

What
other additional programs do you offer for the community?
The Community Center offers a Quick Pay center for residents
to pay their Entergy or Water/Sewer bills. Payments may be made between
the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday. Payments are accepted by check or money order
only.
Paternity testing was a previous service offered at the
community center. It was completed by
Reliagene Technologies, a company based in New Orleans,
Louisiana.
This service is no longer provided at the Community Center. You
may call 1-800-256-4106 to find the nearest testing site in Baton
Rouge.
Baton Rouge Black Alcoholism Council has an office in Dr.
Leo S. Butler Community Center (Metro Health), and this organization’s mission
is: To develop and implement strategies that will reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS
and other sexually transmitted diseases; to educate and provide risk reduction
counseling and testing to individuals in institutional and community settings;
to encourage early HIV testing; to motivate behavioral changes in persons with
behaviors that put them at risk of getting infected with HIV/STD’s; to increase
the awareness of preventive services; to render support and directions to
persons infected with HIV and other STD’s; to offer alcohol and drug prevention
and referral services (basic education, and connect individuals with alcohol or
drug problems to counseling and treatment services.

The LSU
Medical
Center has an outreach branch
located in the Dr. Leo S. Butler Community Center for LSU Medical Center (EKL)
patients. The phone number is 342-8225.
The Community Center has rooms available for rental for
parties, gatherings and meetings. To rent the center for personal events
or meetings, contact Cynthia at 389-4860.

The Community Center is a VITA site where you may e-file
your taxes free of charge. Please call for appointment and times.
The Community Center also offers legal assistance through
the Martinet Legal Foundation, a society of black attorneys who assist with Pro
Bono cases as well as other legal matters. To reach someone in that

Old South Baton Rouge Revitalization is an organization
designed to assist with the redevelopment of South Baton Rouge
by putting up newly constructed affordable housing, for the residents of South
Baton Rouge. The organization is spearheaded by Col. Harold

Community
University
Partnership, or CUP for short, works to combine the resources of LSU with
the strengths of Old South Baton Rouge to build a stronger, more economically
sustainable community. This program is funded primarily by a three year grant
from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development although smaller grants
help to supplement several of the activities sponsored by CUP. CUP works in
three key areas: Neighborhood Revitalization, Community Organization and
Development. Cup’s projects include sponsoring workshops and trainings, building
playgrounds, sponsoring neighborhood clean up campaigns and free legal sessions.

The Community Center also hosts an annual health fair in
August for residents of the community to inform them of changing health habits
and how to maintain healthy lifestyles.
Camp
Computer
is a summer program sponsored by Councilwoman Lorri Burgess. The camp is
geared to help children in our area become more computer proficient and to assist
them with studying for the LEAP exams.
Ray-J’s
College of Hair offers free haircuts here at the Dr. Leo S.
Butler Community Center every first Wednesday of each month from
