| GENERAL DESCRIPTION |
| Under the direction of the Prison Health Care Manager, performs responsible professional nursing work in supervising all nursing and paramedic service personnel in the care and treatment of inmates within East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Supervises all aspects of planning, implementing, and evaluating of inmate care performed by nurses and paramedics. Work involves scheduling twenty-four hour coverage of staff personnel and monitoring physician/dental visits and implementation of physician/dental orders. Work also involves supervising the technical aspects of medical problems of inmates and assessing, evaluating, and modifying individualized treatment plans and reporting recommendations to the Prison Health Care Manager. The incumbent of this class also reviews and ensures all patient care functions are being performed within the standards, policies, and procedures of Prison Medical Services. Employees of this class are required to be available twenty-four hours a day for emergencies. Performs other work as requested. |

| ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS |
| Oversees and coordinates the activities of prison medical staff engaged in clinical and emergency medical functions; supervises Assistant Nursing Services Director in carrying out the responsibility in the management of patient care.
Evaluates the performance of the medical staff and suggests modifications; ensures all medical care is done in accordance with all Prison Medical Services policies and procedures; inspects each medical area to verify that patient needs are met.
Responsible for securing all legend and non-legend medications within the medical department; supervises Supply Officer to ensure medical supplies and equipment are adequately available, controlled and secured; reviews documentation of pharmacy records to ensure controlled substance records are properly maintained and accounted for.
Assists Prison Health Care Manager in establishing protocols and treatment care plans for emergency standing orders, sick call, infirmary calls, medical distribution, critical care, suicide precautions and other areas of treatment within Prison Medical Services.
Organizes and participates in orientation training for staff members; organizes and instructs in-service training for medical staff in areas of clinical and emergency medical care.
Communicates with outside hospitals on the status of inmates admitted and determines appropriate care upon release; reports and documents all records of diseases to East Baton Rouge Parish Health Unit.
Analyzes nursing services to obtain maximum usage of staff time and abilities, reports findings to Prison Health Care Manager; keeps abreast of current medical services in correctional health care and makes recommendations to Prison Health Care Manager for programmatic changes.

| Knowledge of approved nursing techniques.
Knowledge of professional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support level.
Knowledge of mathematics and English used to keep records and produce reports.

| MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS |
| EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE |
| Bachelors degree in nursing, supplemented by four years professional level nursing experience, including three years supervisory experience. |

| SUBSTITUTIONS |
| Any equivalent combination of education and experience. |
| |
| CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES |
| Must possess and maintain a valid professional nurse's license as issued by the Louisiana State Board of Nurse Examiners and certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) throughout employment in this classification.
Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and maintain throughout employment in this classification.

| Must pass a Microsoft Windows proficiency test.
For security purposes, all applicants/employees of EMS-Prison Medical Services must obtain and maintain security clearance with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office throughout employment in this classification.
