When Was the Department Formed?
Baton Rouge Police Department Unit

The police department was formally established in 1865, just after the end of the Civil War, with the appointment of the first Chief of Police.  

 

What is the Jurisdiction of the Department?

The department is responsible for the enforcement of city ordinances and state laws within the city limits of Baton Rouge, an area encompassing approximately 76 square miles and populated by 228,000 citizens.

How Big is the Department?

The Baton Rouge Police Department is authorized to employ 698 sworn officers, 188 specialists and civilians (including communications officers, intelligence analysts, fingerprint technicians, forensic scientists, administrative and clerical personnel) and 110 part-time school crossing guards.

How is the Chief Selected?

The Chief of Police is appointed by, and reports to, the Mayor. All other police positions are promotional and based on seniority, as mandated by state civil service law.

How is the Department Budgeted?

All allotments, budgets and salaries are set by the East Baton Rouge Parish Metropolitan Council. In 2010, the police department’s budget was approximately $75 million.

How is the Department Organized?

The department is organized into four major bureaus and approximately 50 divisions and offices.
